The Path to the UK IT Industry Awards: My Journey as a Business Analyst

Being shortlisted for the UK IT Industry Awards as BA of the Year has been both thrilling and humbling. This recognition reflects years of hard work, continuous learning, and a deep dedication to delivering impactful change through business analysis. My journey has been filled with successes and challenges that have shaped my approach, honed my skills, and helped me make a meaningful impact. Here, I’d like to share some insights into this path, the lessons learned, and why this recognition inspires me to keep growing as a Business Analyst.

Key Milestones in My BA Journey

Over the years, I've had the chance to work across various domains, ranging from insurance to utilities, often in high-stakes environments where efficient and accurate processes are critical. One of my most challenging but rewarding experiences that has led up to my nomination was being part of a large-scale public sector digital transformation project. I was tasked with automating and modernising several core processes, implementing solutions using a rules engine and orchestration platform to integrate both new and legacy systems. This effort streamlined workflows, improved accuracy, and significantly reduced processing times.

This project required a quality-centric approach. I carefully assessed key processes and integration points to ensure they were fit for automation. Designing a scalable architecture for this transformation laid a robust foundation, making the entire system more resilient, reliable, and adaptable to future needs.

How Business Analysis Aligns with My Values

As a Business Analyst, I've found that the role aligns perfectly with my values of collaboration, problem-solving, and continuous improvement. Business analysis is about facilitating clear communication, translating complex requirements, and ensuring that users' needs are met with precision and empathy. For me, it's not just about implementing technology—it’s about creating an environment where technology supports people's work and enhances the organisation.

In the projects that I have been a part of, I strive to bridge the gap between business needs and technical requirements, ensuring that the delivered solution delivers the desired benefits for the  organisation. Leveraging my technology background has been instrumental in navigating communication challenges between stakeholders and technical teams. This enables me to transform business needs into actionable specifications, align technical solutions with user needs, and promote a shared understanding across all business levels.

What This Recognition Means

Being recognised by the UK IT Industry Awards is a great honour that validates the impact of the approaches utilised in my projects. It highlights the importance of high-quality, reliable, and user-centred solutions in IT and business analysis. This recognition has strengthened my commitment to these values and inspired me to push boundaries as the industry continues to evolve alongside ever-advancing technology.

It has also motivated me to continue mentoring junior Business Analysts, both within The Evolution Group, but also professionals at the companies we work with. Sharing my experiences and best practices has been a way to support the next generation of Bas, as well as ensuring our clients have the knowledge needed to be self-sufficient at the end of projects The growth I've seen in those I’ve mentored has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career, reinforcing how powerful the BA role can be in driving positive change.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Reflecting on this journey, I’ve found that certain principles and lessons have been fundamental to my growth as a BA:

  1. Embrace Complexity with Curiosity: Complexities and unforeseen challenges are inevitable in any transformation project. Tackling these with curiosity and a structured approach has allowed me to turn obstacles into opportunities for innovation.

  1. Focus on Quality and Testing: Throughout my career, I’ve adhered to rigorous, quality-focused practices such as test-driven development and automated regression testing. These approaches have been instrumental in delivering consistent and reliable systems, ensuring each solution meets high standards.

  1. Build Relationships and Open Communication Channels: Developing strong relationships with stakeholders is key to the success of any project. By fostering open communication and involving stakeholders at every stage, I’ve been able to drive engagement, support, and a collaborative spirit that enhances project outcomes.

  1. Prioritise Continuous Learning: Staying current with industry advancements and continually expanding my skill set have allowed me to bring fresh perspectives and tools to my projects. Training in platforms like Microsoft Power Platform and Camunda, as well as ongoing professional development, has been crucial in maintaining an innovative and adaptable approach.

Being shortlisted for BA of the Year is a real personal achievement but also recognition of the power of business analysis to transform and empower organisations. I’m grateful to all of the mentors, colleagues, and stakeholders who have been part of my journey as a Business Analyst, as well as to those I’ve had the chance to mentor. Here’s to more milestones, more collaborative successes, and a future of continuous learning and impactful contributions.
